Instructions
Step 1: Activate the Yeast
In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy. This shows the yeast is active!
Step 2: Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients
Add the vegetable oil to the yeast mixture. Gradually stir in 2 cups of flour and the salt, mixing until a rough dough forms.
Step 3: Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 6-8 minutes, gradually adding the remaining 1 cup of flour until smooth and elastic. A stand mixer with a dough hook works great too!
Step 4: First Rise
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled.
Step 5: Shape the Dough
Punch down the dough. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
Step 6: Second Rise
Cover the loaf pan and let rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until doubled again.
Step 7: Bake
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
Step 8: Cool and Serve
Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing. Enjoy!
Cook Notes
- Water Temperature: Use warm water (around 110°F). Hot water kills yeast; cold water won’t activate it.
- Kneading Time: Kneading develops gluten, giving the bread structure. The dough should be slightly tacky but not sticky.
- Rising Environment: If your kitchen is cool, let the dough rise in a slightly warm (turned-off) oven.
